In this sixth installment of our Joomla 1.6 Admin concept, we're focusing on lists, more specially the Modules Manager list. Last time we discussed content creation and focused on the article editor.

Behind content creation, the lists of data in Joomla are a close second in importance. You'll find these list everywhere, in the Menus, Articles, Modules and in most Components. We'll need to establish a base set of standards we'll follow throughout the admin site. While mild variation is perfectly acceptable, the UI needs to remain intuitive throughout.

Module Manager Concept

Immediately you'll notice less information in this view. Most manager views in Joomla are flooded with information that must be terribly confusing to first time users (I can't remember that long ago). We're tucking things away here.

The toolbar can be slimmed down from 9 icons that are fighting for dominance to 2 items, 1 of which is obviously superior, the New button. Trash is renamed Delete since I stared at the toolbar in the latest beta for about 2 minutes before realizing that it was called "Trash". Options, Checkin and Help can be moved under the Config icon.

I've also left a little room for sidebar modules that could be useful such as Recently Edited Modules. Users frequently edit modules several times and this could be a time saver, and also useful for admins to track activity.

Edit and Delete Links

You'll notice that the edit and delete links can be hidden and revealed when you hover over the desired row.

Filters Filters and More Filters!

Filters are a great thing and incredibly useful when hunting down a particular module, but damn there's a million of 'em in Joomla 1.6. Let's tuck these puppies away and reveal them when needed:

AJAX Could Help This Situation

You might notice that they're no Order column in this mockup. Instead AJAX drag'n'drop reordering would be much quicker and save page reloading.

The ability to quickly rename a module might also be handy and save time.

Modal Windows For Editing

Again, instead of requiring the entire page to reload, why not open modules in a modal (heh)? We can then move info into Tabs instead of overloading the initial view.

Up Next

Next I'll be tackling either: Component Dashboard views and/or Page Creation Wizard, which is a workflow concept for creating a new "page" in Joomla instead of using the Menu Manager.
